About
St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO University) and the Science and Technology Studies Center of European University, Russia are organizing a workshop on Erasing Disciplinary Boundaries in Urban Studies: Social Science and Computation in Saint Petersburg, Russia on December 17-19, 2015.
Scope
Digital technologies have fundamentally transformed the process of planning, designing, organizing, and administering contemporary cities, yet while they are a vital aspect of contemporary urban practice, their role and effect are by no means straightforward. On the one hand, the “practitioners” have been able to develop new tools, models, and insights using big data and statistical analysis, with their work geared at impacting and defining planning policy. On the other hand, myriad urban problems, such as poverty, social stratification, issues of accessibility, public participation, pollution, and others, require an optic which does not fit easily with computation-driven research. This event will bring social scientists and urban specialists from various domains of the field together with computation specialists in order to jointly consider issues related to modeling, big data, “smart” cities and infrastructures, open source, new apps and shared platforms, and other key topics in urban study. The two groups will engage with similar topics from different vantage points, aiming to channel the expertise of computation specialists and social scientists toward a joint, profound and nuanced engagement with the contemporary city.Events
Key conference events: • Guest lectures from world leading scientists:• Lectures, trainings, and workshops from World experts in the field of CPS and Social sciences
